A busy period in SAP dev world. Too busy?
It's September, which means it's a busy period in the SAP development world with Devtoberfest, followed by SAPTechEd. There's a lot of content being released, and you might find yourself thinking, "OMG, when will I have time for all of this? 🤷♀️🤷♂️
The best part is… you don’t have to. At least not right now (videos are recorded), unless you're really interested in winning prizes 🏆
In the past few years, I realized it's an anti-pattern for me to try to catch everything during this period. I used to think it was better than postponing things for later (which often became "never"). But I was wrong 🤯🤯🤯
I work with ABAP, the JS side (SAPCAP, SAPUI5), Integration Suite, HANA topics, and more. It was a lot—too much, actually. I realized the added value was minimal. I retained only a very small amount of useful, valuable information.
Most of the information was in the "(maybe) good to know" category, but not required for my current work. It could easily be parked in the distant corners of my brain, just as a bullet point. Simply reading it from a summary would have been enough.
That's why this year, I plan to use my Nvidia RTX to extract the key points from some videos.
All the gamification, badges, and similar things are meant to engage you, and they work from the event organizers' perspective (thanks to dopamine rewards, competition, etc.). Timeboxed events can trigger FOMO (fear of missing out) 😥
Of course, we're all different, and maybe this intense engagement works for you 👍. But if you're feeling overwhelmed by the number of videos and everything else, yet still you want to be "in touch" - just sit down, relax, keep YAGNI in mind. Take care of your brain's load, focus on the quality of information rather than just consumption, and carefully select what you want to dive into. Take your time ⌚👌
